Nii Adjei Tawiah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey, has reassured locals about his organization’s intentions to clear out storm drains and demolish buildings near waterways in preparation for the monsoon season.
Despite the opposition of the impacted victims, the Assembly has recently carried out such demolition exercises, especially in areas that are prone to flooding, to prevent floods.
Speaking with Citi News, Nii Adjei Tawiah said that his group has organized several clean-up events, and these drills are just one of them.
In addition, he asked the populace to participate in the drainage exercises and to be open to such demolition drills.
“We dealt with something similar in Asylum Down for demolition exercises as recently as last week. People sometimes don’t like it because, in their eyes, it’s just a neighbor residing in those illegal buildings and kiosks, and they don’t understand why we should go in and demolish them. But prevention is preferable to treatment.
In addition to praising individuals who engage in personal cleanup projects, Mr. Tawiah pledged to continuously support their initiatives.
People frequently come to the assembly asking for tools, and we provide them with that assistance as well as, occasionally, help with gathering the trash that they’ve managed to extract from the drains. We continue to support the community and provide them with that support.
