In Konongo, in the Ashanti Region’s Asante Akim Central Municipality, a few irate citizens attacked fire officials and damaged a tender.
The incident happened on Saturday, February 10, 2024, and the locals were furious because they thought the firemen were taking too long to respond to a nearby fire.
Konongo fire fighters were sent to a fire site close to Nkwakwa. Since the sole fire engine covers multiple settlements, they had to return quickly to Konongo township after receiving another emergency call while they were at the site.
But the locals started throwing stones and other foul objects at the team because they were upset that the police were taking a long time to get to the site. They traumatized the fire officers and damaged the fire engine.
Despite the fact that no one has been taken into custody, police have opened investigations into the incident. The public was previously warned by the Ghana National Fire Service not to harm its officers.
D.O.3 Peter Addai, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, asked the public to desist from abusing firefighters, pointing out that doing so is against Ghanaian law.
“We risk our lives to come and save people’s lives, and when we are met with such hostilities, it affects us. We want to caution those who engage in such acts to desist because it is an offense under Section 205 of the Criminal Code. It is against the law to prevent an officer from executing his mandate, so we advise people to desist,” he said.
