Kofi Annan, a Ghanaian diplomat and former Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), has been confirmed dead.

The Noble Peace Prize laureate died on early Saturday, August 18, in Switzerland after a short illness.

Known for his splendid humanitarian works, Annan was the first African to serve the role of the world’s top diplomat.

Kofi Annan served two terms from 1997 to 2006 and later served as the UN special envoy for Syria, leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

His tenure in the office of the UN coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV/Aids pandemic.
