According to reports from the Ashanti Regional village of Offinso, the area’s deposed queen mother is acting in ways that suggest she is appealing her eviction.
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, although being formally destooled in January 2024 by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is believed to have appointed a new paramount chief for the region.
The move defies the prevailing situation, in which a new chief has been chosen and sworn an oath before the Asantehene.
She insisted on presenting former Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC) CEO Dr. KK Sarpong, despite his rejection on three occasions by Otumfuo on the grounds that he was not a royal of the area.
Amid allegations of her hiring of KK Sarpong, a video has spread, particularly on Facebook, in which the former GNPC head is praised by persons who are supposed to be his followers.
In a video obtained by GhanaWeb, a group of women is seen chanting praises and greeting KK Sarpong, who is sat on a large chair with his feet on a stool.
Some of the women are heard declaring they had reclaimed their due (the stool), calling any other claimant a fake.
Earlier this week, a mob marched to the former queen mother’s home, demanding a new chief for the Offinso traditional territory. The majority of these dissatisfied residents urged that Dr. KK Sarpong be appointed chief, as he was initially introduced by the kingmakers.
Most of these locals chanted, “We want our new chief, K.K. Sarpong,” while dressed in funeral attire to express their seriousness and anguish over the assertion that there was no leader in town.
Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong was first chosen by the Ofinso queen mother, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, and the other kingmakers to succeed the late Nana Wiafe Akenteng, but he was dismissed by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for not being a royal.
Nana Amoako Poku, a new chief, has subsequently been installed by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This happened after the Kwakwaboa Abusuapanin, Opanin Yaw Nkrumah Adusah, took over the queen’s mother’s responsibilities in her absence and introduced the new candidate.
Rumours circulated during the new chief’s installation that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had destooled Offinso’s queen mother for failing to respond to his invitations.
