German singer and composer Kim Petras was born on August 27, 1992, and she currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Before signing with Amigo and Republic Records in 2021, she released songs as an independent artist between 2016 and 2020 under her own imprint, BunHead Records.

Petras started making music while she was a teenager, and in 2011, she released her debut extended play, One Piece of Tape. Petras followed her early breakthrough by releasing a collection of digital singles that would subsequently form her unofficial body of work known as Era 1. On June 28, 2019, Petras released her debut album Clarity. The album was preceded by a nine-week advertising effort in which Petras released one single every week with a visual lyric video. Clarity gained critical acclaim and peaked at number seven on the Heatseekers chart and number 26 on the Independent Albums chart.

In October 2019, Petras released her second studio album, Turn Off the Light. Petras had more success in 2020 with her songs “Malibu” and “Broken Glass,” the latter of which was a collaboration with Kygo.
