The late Khaled Khalifa was a Syrian novelist, screenwriter, and poet. He was nominated three times and shortlisted twice for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. His works have often been critical of the Syrian Baathist government and have thus been banned in the country.
Khaled Khalifa graduated from Al-Mutanabbi High School in 1982 studied law at Aleppo University in 1988 and actively participated in the foundation of Aleph magazine with a group of writers and poets. A few months later, the magazine was closed down by Syrian censorship.
