Keta Presbytery urges Akufo-Addo to assent to anti-LGBTQ+ bill

The Global Evangelical Church (GEC) in the Keta Presbytery has called on President Akufo-Addo to proceed with the anti-LGBTQ Bill in spite of any pending legal actions.

The President’s decision to hold off on signing the bill due to ongoing court cases has sparked discussions and dissatisfaction among religious groups and leaders.

After nearly three years of deliberation, the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill was unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28. This legislation proposes a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of three years in prison for offenders.

The leadership of the Keta Presbytery of GEC has disregarded the President’s concerns about lawsuits, urging him to promptly sign the bill into law. They emphasized the importance of upholding moral values, societal laws, and religious beliefs that do not support the LGBTQ movement.

The Presbytery also expressed gratitude to God for guiding and protecting Ghanaians, commended the government’s efforts in combating extremism and terrorism, and urged attention to citizen grievances.

In addition to focusing on the anti-LGBTQ Bill, the Presbytery highlighted broader national issues such as the need for improvements in the Free Senior High School (SHS) Policy, fair and transparent elections by the Electoral Commission, and the safeguarding of the youth.

They also called on traditional leaders and community members to address social problems and encouraged all citizens to plant more trees to help combat climate change.
