President Ronald Reagan’s chief of staff during his final year in office, Ken Duberstein, died on Wednesday, his son confirmed to CNN.
He was 77 years old at the time.
Duberstein was Reagan’s closest confidante and adviser, serving in the White House at the start of the Republican President’s first term and in the last months of his second.
In 1981, he joined the administration as a congressional liaison, assisting in the passage of Reagan’s tax cuts and budget package.
In 1983, he left the White House to work for a lobbying business, only to be called back in 1987, when Reagan’s support ratings were at an all-time low following the Iran-Contra crisis.
