Ken Buchanan, a Scottish boxing legend, died at the age of 77. The heartbreaking discovery came a year after his son revealed that Buchanan had dementia.
Buchanan, who fought 69 times in his illustrious career, made history by becoming Scotland’s first undisputed world champion, and many regard him as the country’s finest boxer of all time.
Buchanan’s professional career took off like a rocket, with him winning 33 consecutive rights before retiring in 1982 with a 61-9 record. This included 27 knockout victories.
The Ken Buchanan Foundation acknowledged his death on Saturday: “It is with great sadness that we have to inform you Ken passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning.”
The statement added: “Further announcements will come and please give the family some time to process this sad news. RIP Ken, always a gentleman and one of the best champions we will ever see.”
Buchanan became Scotland’s first undisputed world champion in 1971, when he defeated Ruben Navarro in Los Angeles to capture the WBC title.
It wasn’t until 2021 that the feat was equaled, as Josh Taylor defeated José Ramirez to replicate the feat.
