Kenyan marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was expected to break the two-hour mark, passed away in a vehicle accident on Sunday. He was 24 years old.

Kenyan police have confirmed that Kelvin Kiptum, the current world record holder for marathon distance, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana perished in a traffic accident on Sunday night outside the town of Eldoret in the Rift Valley.
About eleven o’clock at night, Kiptum drove off the road and struck a tree while operating his Toyota Premio in western Kenya, not far from his childhood village. Cmdr. Peter Mulinge of the Elgeyo-Marakwet County Police stated on Sunday.

Kiptum’s obituary information is yet to be made public. Kiptum broke the record set by fellow Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge in October by winning the Chicago marathon in 2 hours, 35 seconds.
This made him the first person to finish an official race in under 2 hours and 1 minute. Kiptum had never participated in a marathon race before to last year.
