Key was born in Southfield, Michigan, on March 22, 1971. He is the son of Carrie Herr, a lady of Polish and Flemish ancestry, and Leroy McDuffie, an African-American. At an early age, Michael Key and Patricia Walsh, a couple from Detroit who both worked in social services, adopted him. His adopted parents were also a black guy and a white lady, just like his birth parents. Key had two half-brothers through his biological father, one of which being the creator of comic books, Dwayne McDuffie. Key didn’t learn about his half-siblings until after they had both passed away.
