Porter was born on January 3, 1974, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and grew up in a small farming community. Dan Porter, her father, was a farmer-turned-banker. Liz, her mother, founded Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.

Porter attended Yale University after graduating from Phillips Academy, where she majored in American studies and graduated in 1996. The Effects of Corporate Farming on Rural Community was the title of her undergraduate thesis. She was a Grace member.

Yale’s Hopper College (then Calhoun College). During this time, Porter also interned for Chuck Grassley.

Porter later attended Harvard Law School, where she was a member of the Board of Student Advisers and the notes editor for the Harvard Women’s Law Journal. She earned her Juris Doctor in 2001 after studying under bankruptcy law professor and future U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Porter worked as a law clerk in Little Rock, Arkansas, for Judge Richard S. Arnold of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. She worked for the Portland, Oregon-based law firm Stoel Rives LLP and was the project director for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges’ Business Bankruptcy Project.
