The most successful golfer in history, Kathy Whitworth, passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve in the company of loved ones. She was 83.
“Kathy left this world the way she lived her life, loving, laughing and creating memories,” Whitworth’s longtime companion Bettye Odle was quoted in an LPGA press release.
According to Rhonda Glenn, who published “The Illustrated History of Women’s Golf,” Whitworth’s strength was her tenacity and refusal to give up. She was not ashamed to confess that she aspired to be the best player in the entire world.
Whitworth’s family ran a hardware business, and her father, Morris, was elected mayor three times. She was born in Monahans, Texas, and raised in Jal, New Mexico, not far from the Texas border. When her tennis-playing buddies wanted to try golf, she started playing the sport at the age of 15.
