Estonian politician and former Secretary of the Communist Party of Estonia,
Karl Genrikhovich Vaino, popularly known as Karl Vaino has died. He died on Saturday, February 19, 2022, aged 98.

Vaino was ethnically Estonian and had a common Estonian second name. However, he grew up in Russia, only later moving to the Estonian SSR.

He was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Estonia from 1978 through to 1988, the first year of the Singing Revolution which culminated in full Estonian independence from the Soviet Union three years later.

Vaino was replaced by the more moderate Vaino Väljas in summer 1988, after which he left Estonia for good, settling in Moscow.

The cause of Karl Vaino’s death is said to be of natural cause. His death was announced on the website of a Russian Orthodox church in Borodino on Saturday.

He is survived by his wife and two children. His daughter Eleonora Kochetova, is the daughter-in-law of Soviet writer Vsevolod Kochetov, and his son Eduard is the Vice President for External Relations at AvtoVAZ.

Vaino also has two grandsons; Russian politician Anton Vaino and Russian Interior Ministry official Andrey Vaino.
