According to reports, Karim Benzema will not be ready for Sunday night’s La Liga match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Due to the muscular issue he sustained in the Champions League match against Celtic on September 6, the 34-year-old has missed his team’s last two games against Mallorca and RB Leipzig.
The France international might return for the Madrid derby, according to Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was speaking ahead of Wednesday’s game with Leipzig.
Real Madrid held a rehabilitation workout on Thursday morning without Benzema present, and the Frenchman is reportedly fighting for this weekend’s availability, according to writer Carlos Rodriguez.
It “will be difficult” for the striker to recuperate from his injury in time to face Diego Simeone’s side, according to Rodriguez, who adds that the forward is still working inside with a physiotherapist.
“There’s a chance, as he is evolving well. But he’ll only play if there are no concerns at all,” the Italian told reporters during his press conference before the European affair.
During the 2022–23 season, Benzema has once again been in excellent form for Los Blancos, recording four goals and one assist in six games across all competitions.
The former Lyon youth had a stellar 2021–22 season, making 46 appearances, scoring 44 goals and adding 15 assists while helping his team win La Liga, the Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup.
