On November 22, 1978, American singer, pianist, and composer Karen Lee Orzolek was born in South Korea. She sings lead vocals for the unsigned rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
She was the daughter of a Polish father and a Korean mother, and she was born in Seoul, South Korea. Later, the family relocated to Englewood, New Jersey, where she was raised and finished her education at both the Elisabeth Morrow School and the Dwight-Englewood School.
“It’s almost embarrassing how well-behaved I was as a child,” she said of her upbringing. “Perhaps that’s why I do things like spew water on myself on stage as an adult.”
She attended Oberlin College before enrolling at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
