Kagame expected to cruise to fourth term in Rwanda election

Rwandan President Paul Kagame is poised to secure a fourth term in office as he faces two opposition candidates in the upcoming election.

Despite being a key figure in ending the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and overseeing the country’s reconstruction, Kagame has been criticized for alleged rights abuses and conflicts with neighboring countries.

With only two contenders running against Kagame due to disqualifications by the electoral commission, expectations for a competitive race are low. The incumbent president garnered almost 99% of the vote in the previous election, following a constitutional amendment that removed term limits.

While Kagame’s government has been commended for Rwanda’s development post-genocide, accusations of media censorship, political assassinations, and support for rebel groups in Congo have raised concerns internationally. The recent migration deal between Rwanda and Britain further strained relations, with the UK scrapping the agreement under new leadership.

Despite the criticisms, Kagame remains confident in his campaign promises of continued progress and stability for Rwanda. Both approved opposition candidates, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana, aim to challenge Kagame’s dominance in the polls and provide alternative leadership options.

Over 9 million registered voters will participate in the election, which will also determine members of the lower house of parliament. Initial results are anticipated by July 20, as Rwandans await the outcome of this pivotal election.
