Justin Hurwitz was born in California, the son of writer Ken Hurwitz and Gail (née Halabe), a former professional ballet dancer who is now a certified nurse. In 1998, his family relocated to Wisconsin, and he enrolled at Nicolet High School there.
Hurwitz wrote humor for The League, a sitcom, and one episode of The Simpsons, an animated comedy television series, after graduating from college. Hurwitz and Chazelle then relocated to Los Angeles. Guy and Madeline’s commercial success allowed them to get funding for their subsequent project, Whiplash (2014), which was written and directed by Chazelle and featured music by Hurwitz.
Hurwitz also provided the music for Chazelle’s 2016 film La La Land, for which Hurwitz won two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song in addition to Chazelle’s Best Director win.
