Retired Nigerian international football star Justice Christopher has been confirmed dead. He died on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the age of 40.

Christopher featured in the Nigerian squad against England at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

He played for several clubs in Nigeria and Europe, including Belgian outfit Antwerp, Bulgarian side Levski Sofia and clubs in Sweden, Denmark and Russia.

He picked up 11 senior caps for Nigeria, playing in all three of their 2002 World Cup games as well as captaining his country’s U20 team.

Justice Christopher cause of death

According to several Nigerian media outfits, the midfielder died on Wednesday morning at his hotel in Jos, Nigeria. Reports say he played a social game of football just 24 hours earlier.

However, no official cause of his death has been confirmed. His autopsy report has been scheduled and would be released this week.

Confirming his death, the Nigerian Football Federation issued a statement saying: “We are devastated to hear of the sudden passing away of former Super Eagles midfielder Justice Christopher early on Wednesday morning.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and football community in Nigeria. May his soul rest in peace,” it added.

Christopher had a net worth of less than $1 million at the time of his death. He could have made more considering his unique talent. However, the midfielder’s promising career was plagued by a knee complaint, restricting him to just a handful of appearances at club level.
