Jurors nationwide have taken the bold step to declare an indefinite strike due to the non-payment of their allowances, effective immediately.
This decision comes as a result of unresolved arrears dating back to February 2023, as well as allowances owed from July 2023 to May 2024.
In a statement released by the jurors, they expressed the financial strain they have been facing due to the absence of these payments. The jurors emphasized that the lack of financial support has made it practically impossible for them to continue financing their transportation to and from the court premises.
Despite their commitment to the justice system, the jurors have been left with no choice but to halt their duties until their allowances are paid. They were promised payment in May, but subsequent follow-ups revealed that there are currently no funds available. The backlog of ten months’ worth of allowances has significantly impacted their personal finances.
The jurors stated, “We regret any inconvenience our absence may have on the expeditious delivery of justice.” Their strike is expected to cause delays and disruptions in the judicial process, affecting the timely delivery of justice. Indictable court cases, including the Joseph Boakye Danquah murder trial, Gregory Afoko trial, Kasoa teenage killers murder trial, among others, will be heavily affected as jurors will not be present for the hearings.
