Mohamed Salah had scored goals in five of Liverpool’s first six Premier League games putting last season’s campaign into perspective. However, he hasn’t scored in four of their first six games this season.
It has been difficult to pinpoint a specific reason for his poor start, but one theory has focused on a different position he has played in Jurgen Klopp’s team this year.
The Egyptian appears to be playing far wider than in past seasons, according to those who have been following him each week, however, Klopp promptly discredited that idea following Saturday’s scoreless draw with Everton at Goodison Park.
(I am not sure what you are seeing, he is not out wide any more than in other seasons,) Klopp stated after the match. (We want to have Mo Salah there in this position but we want to have Mo more often in central positions as well), Klopp added.
Despite the German’s refutation of this theory, the evidence does seem to support the idea that Salah probably might not have been given the same level of attacking freedom as in the past.
His heatmap from the previous campaign contrasts with this one and highlights much less pressing in the penalty area towards the opposition’s goal so far.
