Pegues, the first Black basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh, died after undergoing cancer treatment.

When he died, he was 86 years old.

The 6-foot-3 forward enrolled at Pitt as a freshman in 1954 and played for a year before getting a scholarship and being promoted to the varsity team.

He averaged 13.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 77 games for the Panthers, twice leading them to the NCAA tournament, including a 31-point performance in a first-round loss to Miami (Ohio) in 1958.
