The American jurist and television personality Judy Sheindlin, whose real name was Judith Blum, was born on October 21, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. She became well known for her role as Judge Judy on television.
In 1963, Blum received a Bachelor of Arts degree from American University in Washington, D.C. She was the sole female student in her graduating class from New York Law School in New York City when she earned a J.D. and passed the bar exam in 1965. She was already married at the time, and although she began a private practice, she soon left it to concentrate on raising her two children.
Although her first marriage ended in divorce, she remarried in 1977 to Gerald Sheindlin, a fellow attorney who later rose to become a Supreme Court judge in the state of New York.
In 1972, Sheindlin accepted a post as a prosecuting attorney in the family court of New York City. In 1982, Ed Koch, the then-mayor of New York City, nominated her as a judge in the Bronx branch of the family court after being impressed by her straight and honest approach to her cases.
