NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi found himself at the center of attention during the hearing of the ambulance purchase trial involving former Deputy Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa.
The presiding judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe, expressed her displeasure with comments made in the media regarding the case. She specifically took issue with a statement made by Sammy Gyamfi in which he suggested that if someone can call an accused person without his lawyer, then that person can call a judge, in reference to actions taken by the Attorney-General.
The judge warned against making statements that cast a negative light on the judiciary, emphasizing that such remarks would not be tolerated. However, Sammy Gyamfi defended his statement as a theoretical and general comment, rather than a specific accusation against a particular judge.
Despite his explanation, Justice Asare Botwe cautioned Sammy Gyamfi, emphasizing that his statement was of no consequence. This led to a back-and-forth exchange between the judge and the NDC Communications Officer.
Former Attorney-General Marietta Oppong Brew intervened to call Sammy Gyamfi to order, prompting Justice Asare Botwe to invite Gyamfi, Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, lawyers representing Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa, as well as former Attorney-General Marietta Oppong Brew, to a meeting in her chambers.
The case has been adjourned to June 4 for further proceedings, as tensions between the judge and the NDC Communications Officer continue to simmer.
