Joyce DeWitt, an American actress and comedian who was born on April 23, 1949, in Wheeling, West Virginia, is best known for playing Janet Wood on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company from 1977 until 1984.

She is of Italian descent. DeWitt first entered the stage at the age of thirteen. She took part in the speech and debate contests held by the Indiana High School Forensic Association. After leaving Speedway Senior High School, she used to work at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s ticket office.

She was a UCLA student who worked as a secretary up to the time she made her television debut on Baretta. Despite reports to the contrary, Dewitt has stated that she has never met actor Abe Vigoda.

DeWitt gained her position as Janet Wood in the comedy Three’s Company during its run from 1977 to 1984 after being chosen for the role in the second pilot. In the play Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating, Mating, & Marriage at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre in Times Square, New York City, DeWitt replaced Eve Plumb in the title character in June 2011. She performed in a Canadian theatrical adaptation of Dinner with Friends at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Canada, in the same year.
