John Francis Egan was a professional basketball player and coach from the United States.

He died on Thursday after suffering brain injuries in an accident.

Egan was the first Rockets coach to win a playoff series, defeating the New York Knicks in 1975, two years after the Knicks had won the NBA title. At Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence College, he was an All-American.

As the first on-air broadcast partner of Bill Worrell, he was widely regarded as one of the innovators of the floater in the lane to get shots over large opponents. At the end of the 2020-21 season, he attended the Rockets’ homage to Worrell.

“My father never missed a game,” John Egan Jr. said.

Egan coached the Rockets from 1972 to 1976 before retiring and settling in Houston to work in the insurance industry.

Joan, his wife, died of ovarian cancer in 1998. Egan started forming a group to undertake humanitarian work in the neighborhood from a Starbucks, where he became a regular, while also teaching basketball on the side.

Egan, who was always active and in great shape, was performing finger-tip push-ups far into his 80th birthday.
