Canadian sports journalist and broadcaster John Short is dead. He died at the age of 86 on January 11, 2024, in Toronto, Ontario.

John Short wrote a column for the Edmonton Sun. Short formerly worked for the Canadian Press, Edmonton Journal, as well as the Edmonton Oilers as public relations director. He also hosted various sports-related radio shows.

John Short was born in Liverpool, one of five children of John Short Sr., a General Post Office technician, and Agnes Leary, a factory worker and cleaner. His devout Catholic roots led him initially to train for the priesthood at a seminary in Valladolid, Spain. But the wider world called, and after national service in the mid-1950s, he landed jobs successively as a reporter at the Birkenhead Advertiser and St Helens Reporter, and then as a sub-editor on the Liverpool Daily Post.
John Short is survived by Hilda and their children, Emma and David.
