John Newton Mitchell, who presided over Nixon’s 1968 and 1972 presidential campaigns, served as the 67th Attorney General of the United States from September 15, 1913, until November 9, 1988.

He had previously worked as a municipal bond attorney and been close to Nixon personally. As a result of his role in the Watergate scandal, he was put on trial and found guilty.

Following his time as attorney general, he led Nixon’s presidential campaign in 1972. Mitchell received a prison sentence in 1977 for a number of offenses he committed during the Watergate scandal, and he served 19 months.

In the midst of multiple high-profile anti-Vietnam War protests, he was known for personifying the “law-and-order” attitudes of the Nixon administration while serving as Attorney General.

In the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., at around 5:00 p.m. on November 9, 1988, Mitchell suffered a heart attack and passed away at the George Washington University Hospital later that day. At Arlington National Cemetery, he was laid to rest with the due military respect. Due to his involvement in the Navy during World War II and his prior appointment as Attorney General to the Cabinet, he qualified for the distinction.
