
Tributes have flooded social media as many expressed their condolences today, June 27, following the death of former cabinet minister John Leefe, who died at the age of 80 on June 25 after a life of dedicated public service.

Mr. Leefe began his career as a teacher and rose through the ranks to become the Queens District School Board’s Assistant Director of Curriculum.
He was first elected as an MLA for Queens in 1978 and served as Minister of Fisheries, Minister of Environment, Minister of Natural Resources, and Government House Leader before retiring from provincial politics in 1999.
He was elected Mayor of the Region of Queens Municipality in 2000 and served in that capacity until 2012.

Leefe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Leefe, as well as his son Philip of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, and daughter Sarah Ackerman (Vincent Ackerman) of Denver, Colorado.
