John Raymond Kavanagh (born January 18, 1977) is an Irish martial arts teacher, jiu-jitsu practitioner, and former professional MMA fighter. Conor McGregor, Makwan Amirkhani, and Gunnar Nelson are among his students.
He is the owner and head coach of Straight Blast Gym Ireland in Inchicore, Ireland. He now serves as the president of the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association. After seeing footage of the UFC event in 1993, Kavanagh was motivated to pursue mixed martial arts.
He was a pioneer of MMA in Ireland, competing in some of the early local circuit MMA events in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and he is the first Irishman to obtain a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Today, Kavanagh is regarded as one of the top MMA trainers in the world, having been nominated for and winning the World MMA Awards “Coach of the Year” award in 2016.
Kavanagh is also the promoter of the MMA company Euro Fight Night, which conducted its first event in October 2019.
The Irish Amateur MMA Organization, IMMMA, is currently led by John Kavanagh.
