A popular Irish martial arts instructor, Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, and former professional mixed martial fighter John Raymond Kavanagh was born on January 18, 1977. Fighters like Conor McGregor, Makwan Amirkhani, and Gunnar Nelson are among his pupils.
He is the owner and head coach of the Inchicore, Ireland, MMA gym Straight Blast Gym Ireland. He currently serves as the Irish Mixed Martial Arts Association’s president. Kavanagh became interested in mixed martial arts after seeing a video of the UFC competition from 1993.
He was an early participant in Irish mixed martial arts competitions and the first Irishman to earn a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He also participated in some of the earliest Irish and UK local circuit MMA events. In 2001, Matt Thornton, the man who founded Straight Blast Gym International, welcomed Kavanagh into its network of gyms.
