In 1932, on March 31st, Jakes was born in Chicago, Illinois. During his undergraduate years in the early 1950s, he made his first story sales to pulp publications.
At DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, Jakes majored in creative writing. He received his degree there in 1953. The next year, he graduated from Ohio State University with an M.A. in American literature. On August 23, 1952, he and Rachel—who had been married for 13 months—appeared on the game programme Beat the Clock.

Jakes and his wife Rachel, whom he had been wed to since 1951, resided on Bird Key in Sarasota, Florida. Victoria, J. Michael, Andrea, and Dr Ellen were their four grown children.
On March 11, 2023, Jakes passed away in Sarasota at the age of 90.
