The legendary historical fiction author John Jakes passed away on Saturday in a hospice facility in Sarasota, Florida.
His generational family sagas of the American Revolution and the Civil War combined real and fictional characters and became wildly successful best sellers and popular television fare. He was 90.

Jakes died in Sarasota on March 11, 2023, at the age of 90.
On March 31, 1932, Jakes was born in Chicago, Illinois. While still a college student in the early 1950s, he sold his first stories to pulp publications.
Jakes received his degree in 1953 from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he studied creative writing.
Afterwards, he received a master’s degree in American literature from Ohio State University. On August 23, 1952, he and Rachel, who had been married for 13 months, made an appearance on the game programme Beat the Clock.
