John Huh was born in New York City to Korean parents who moved to New York in 1985.
Two months after his birth, he moved with his parents to South Korea. There his father, Oksik, owned fabric business. His father taught him all kinds of sports from baseball and soccer to tae kwon do and golf.
He lived there for 12 years before moving back to Chicago, Illinois for three years, and then to Los Angeles, California. During this time, Oksik trained himself to be an assistant sushi chef, but the work wasn’t always steady.
His mother, Sook Chan, worked part-time in the back rooms of Korean restaurants.
He attended Crescenta Valley High School and played for the high school gold team. He later attended California State University, Northridge for two weeks before turning professional in 2008.
