John Warnock Hinckley Jr., born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on May 29, 1955, is an American assassination attempt on US President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981, two months after Reagan’s first inauguration.

Hinckley shot Reagan, police officer Thomas Delahanty, and Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy with a.22 caliber pistol. He seriously injured Press Secretary James Brady, who was permanently handicapped in the shooting and died 33 years later from his injuries.

Hinckley allegedly sought celebrities to please actress Jodie Foster, on whom he had an obsessive crush. He was judged not guilty because of insanity and was institutionalized for more than three decades. The public outcry over the verdict prompted the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984, which changed the criteria for considering defendants’ mental illnesses in Federal Criminal Court proceedings in the United States.

It is not established that John has children. Even if he does, their names are unknown.

A federal judge concluded in 2016 that Hinckley may be discharged from psychiatric care because he was no longer a danger to himself or others, but with many limitations.

After 2020, Hinckley will be able to openly display his artwork, poetry, and music under his name, rather than anonymously, as he did previously. He has since established a YouTube channel for his music. His limitations were lifted unconditionally in June 2022.
