John Bura served as a bishop for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the United States from June 12, 1944, to January 17, 2023. He passed away at the age of 78 years old in Washington DC.
From 2006 to 2019, he was the Auxiliary Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. He was the Eparch of Saint Josaphat in Parma’s Apostolic Administrator from 2009 until 2014.
Bura’s family immigrated to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1950 after he was born in Wegeleben, Germany. He received his education at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., as well as St. Basil Minor Seminary in Stamford, Connecticut.
On February 14, 1971, he was consecrated as a priest for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia by Archbishop Ambrozij Andrew Senyshyn, O.S.B.M.
