John Bird, born 22 November 1936, was an English satirist, actor, and comedian best known for his work in television satire, which included numerous appearances alongside John Fortune.
John Bird grew up in Bulwell, Nottingham, and went to High Pavement Grammar School. He met John Fortune while studying at King’s College, Cambridge. The bird rose to prominence during the 1960s television satire boom, featuring in That Was The Week That Was, a title devised by Bird.
The bird was originally cast in the character of David Frost in the series by Ned Sherrin but was cast elsewhere. He also appeared in Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life, If It Moves File It, Dangerous Brothers, A Very Peculiar Practice, My Father Knew Lloyd George, and The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball.
