James Richard Garoppolo (born November 2, 1991), nicknamed Jimmy G, is an American football quarterback for the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers (NFL).
He attended Eastern Illinois University, where he earned the Walter Payton Award as a senior and established school records for career throwing yards and passing touchdowns. Garoppolo was drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft and spent his first four seasons as Tom Brady’s backup.
Garoppolo grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He is the third of four kids born to Denise (née Malec) and retired electrician Tony Garoppolo Sr. His older brothers are architect Tony Garoppolo Jr. and teacher Mike Garoppolo, while his younger brother is Billy Garoppolo.
Anthony and Rose Garoppolo, his paternal grandparents, were both Italian immigrants, while his maternal grandparents, Theodore J. Malec and Harriet D. Seidel, were of Polish and German descent, respectively.
