Growing up in Plains, Georgia, the families of Jimmy and Rosalynn were close friends and neighbours. While Rosalynn was a student at Georgia Southwestern College and Jimmy was enrolled at the US Naval Academy, the two started dating in 1945.
According to the White House, Jimmy informed his mother after their first date, “She’s the girl I want to marry.”
