Jim Hageman cause of death: What happened to Harriet Hageman’s father?
Jim Hageman is a Fort Laramie Republican who had planned to retire at the end of his term. He died on Wednesday morning at the age of 76.
Hageman was first elected to the Wyoming House in 1982 and served more than 23 years before announcing earlier this year that he planned to retire. He underwent surgery in January for an undisclosed illness but still made it to Cheyenne in February and March for the Legislature’s budget session.
His cause of death at the moment is not known yet, his family has not released any information concerning what causes his death. Any updates will be communicated to you soon.
Services are being handled by Colyer Funeral Home in Torrington. A public visitation was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, followed by funeral services Monday at First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church in Torrington.
“Wyoming has lost a great man, a great leader and a tremendous voice for agriculture,” House Speaker Randall Luthi said. “During his more than 20 years in the House, he always was a voice of reason and common sense. We have lost more than a legislator, we have lost a friend that practiced what he preached in politics and life.”
Hageman was also fondly remembered in the Senate.
“He had a wealth of experience, and the fingerprint he left on the bills he worked on not only benefited Goshen County, but the state as a whole,” Sen. Curt Meier, R-LaGrange, told the Torrington Telegram. “His mark will be felt for generations to come.”
Earlier this year, the University of Wyoming awarded Hageman an honorary doctor of laws degree in recognition of his long ties to the university and his dedication to Wyoming and its residents. He was a member of the UW Alumni Association board of directors from 1991 to 1996 and served on the board of the Institute for Environment and Natural Resources.
“Though he attended the University of Wyoming for only two years, leaving to help run the family ranch, Jim Hageman supported public education in general and the University of Wyoming specifically during his 23 years as a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives,” UW President Tom Buchanan said.
“Jim was a true son of Wyoming,” Buchanan said, “and he will be missed.”
Hageman was born near Shawnee in 1930. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1948 and attended the University of Wyoming in 1948 and 1949. He spent much of his life ranching with his family near Fort Laramie.
He served on the Goshen County school board for nine years. After his election to the Legislature, he chaired the House Education Committee for 11 years and the House Agriculture, Public Lands and Water Resources Committee for four years.
“The passion he held for building up our public education system, and for improving the lives of children overall, should serve as an example for us all,” Gov. Dave Freudenthal said.
On Tuesday, Matt Teeters won 52 per cent of the vote in a three-way race to replace Hageman as the district’s Republican nominee.
