Yasmin “Jessie” Duarte has passed away at the age of 68. She was a South African politician and acting secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC).

Jessie Duarte was born on September 19, 1953, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her older brother was Achmat Dangor, who was a writer, poet, and development professional.
She is known as a long time anti-apartheid activist and served variously as a special assistant to Nelson Mandela.
Duarte has also served as a member of the provincial cabinet (MEC) for Gauteng, as ambassador to Mozambique. Before assuming her position as secretary-general for ANC, she was their spokesperson.
In 2022, she was granted sick leave by the African National Congress (ANC) for months. The media falsely claimed that she had died, however, on 24 April 2022, she revealed that she had been battling cancer.
She passed away from cancer on July 17, 2022. She is survived by her two children who she had with her ex-husband, John Duarte.
