Jessie Duarte, acting secretary-general of the African National Congres (ANC) has passed away at the age of 68. She was also long time anti-apartheid activist who served variously as a special assistant to Nelson Mandela.

In 2022, she was granted sick leave by the African National Congress (ANC) which lasted for months.
The media falsely claimed that she had died due to her prolonged absence. On 24 April 2022, she revealed that she had been battling cancer. Despite seeking treatment, she passed away from cancer on July 17, 2022.
