American musician Jeremiah Martin Green (March 4, 1977 – December 31, 2022) is best known for being the band’s drummer and founding member from 1993 to March 2003 and again from May 2004 till his passing in December 2022.
When Green was still a senior in high school, he started touring and recording. Green performed with the groups Satisfact on K Records, Red Stars Theory on Touch and Go Records, and Peeved on Distressed Records in the middle of the 1990s. Along with Psychic Emperor, Green also performed with the Vells and another group. Both bands performed at venues in the Pacific Northwest and around Seattle.
On his birthday in 2003, Green parted ways with Modest Mouse. Later, he would disclose that he had a nervous breakdown and had been briefly taken to a mental facility. He had previously received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and an Effexor prescription.
He went through severe manic episodes when psychedelic mushrooms and alcohol were combined. The band had swiftly persuaded Green to come back when he left, but on the second day of recording in Portland, he lost his cool and “disappeared” for two months.
When he stopped taking his antidepressant, he went through a difficult withdrawal period. When Green wasn’t there, Modest Mouse at first thought of disbanding.
Ben Weikel of The Helio Sequence subsequently took Green’s place. Green’s departure rendered him unavailable during the entirety of the band’s 2004 album Good News for People Who Love Bad News’s recording.
In May 2004, Green formally re-joined the group. Green made an appearance on Graig Markel’s 2007 Sonic Boom Label album Via Novella. Under the alias World Gang, Green and Plastiq Phantom collaborated on drum breaks 7″ that was released on the Imputor? label in May 2008.
He was married to Lauren Green, who ran the Thuja store in the heart of Port Townsend. In 2016, their son Wilder was born.
Green was diagnosed with stage IV cancer on December 25, 2022, according to the news. Dec. 31, 2022, marked his passing.
