Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on July 24, 1969, in the Bronx, a New York City borough, and grew up in the Castle Hill neighborhood. David López and Guadalupe Rodrguez, her parents, were born in Puerto Rico and moved to the United States as children.

David worked as a computer technician at Guardian Insurance Company after serving in the army. Guadalupe was a stay-at-home mom for the first ten years of Lopez’s life before going on to work as a Tupperware salesperson and kindergarten and gym teacher. After 33 years of marriage, they divorced in the 1990s.

Lopez is the middle child among three siblings, with an older sister, Leslie, and a younger sister, Lynda. The three of them shared a bedroom. Lopez’s upbringing has been described as “strict.” She was raised in a Roman Catholic family, attended Mass every Sunday, and received a Catholic education at Holy Family School and Preston High School for girls. Lopez ran track on a national level, gymnastics, and was a member of the softball team in high school. She performed in school musicals and had a lead role in a Godspell production. In the typical Puerto Rican household, there was “a lot of music,” and Lopez and her sisters were encouraged to sing, dance, and write their own plays for family events. West Side Story left an indelible impression on the young Lopez, who aspired to be an entertainer from a young age. She began taking dance lessons at Ballet Hispánico on the Upper West Side when she was five years old. She learned flamenco, jazz, and ballet as a teenager at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club and later taught dance to younger students, including Kerry Washington. She worked as a part-time secretary at a law firm after high school and studied business for one semester at New York’s Baruch College.
