American screenwriter and director Jeff Baena is best known for his work on Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), Horse Girl (2020), Spin Me Round (2022), and for co-writing I Heart Huckabees (2004). He was born on June 29, 1977. His frequent collaborations with Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza, who is also his wife, have made him well-known.
Baena moved to Los Angeles to begin his career development after graduating from the NYU Film School. He worked on several films as Robert Zemeckis’ production assistant.
Baena took a job as an assistant editor for writer-director David O. Russell after working with Zemeckis. Baena’s eye was damaged in a minor car accident after they had been working together for half a year. Russell started talking to Baena about story ideas, part of the time to keep his spirits up and pass the time while he was recovering from that. In the end, they worked together on four scripts.
I Heart Huckabees was one of those four scripts, and Russell directed it in 2004. Baena started focusing on writing at the same time, and he wrote the zombie comedy Life After Beth, which would become his first feature film as a director.
Baena had intended for Joshy to be his directorial debut; however, actor and co-worker Adam Pally was forced to withdraw for personal reasons. Baena then made the decision to work on his 2003 novel, Life After Beth.
