Baena relocated to Los Angeles to begin establishing his profession after graduating from NYU Film School. He started working on several movies as Robert Zemeckis’ production assistant.
Immediately after her time with Zemeckis, Baena accepted a position as an assistant editor for the writer-director David O. Russell. After working together for a year and a half, Baena suffered an eye injury from a small vehicle accident. While Russell was recovering from that, he started talking with Baena about narrative ideas in part to keep himself entertained. In the end, the two worked together on four scripts.
I Heart Huckabees, which Russell directed in 2004, was one of those four scripts.
