Jean-Pierre Soisson, son of an industrialist, was born in Auxerre on November 9, 1934. He served as a second lieutenant in Algeria from 1957 to 1959 and joined the Court of Auditors after quitting the ENA in 1962. After that, he joined ministerial cabinets. From 1969 to 1975, he worked as deputy secretary general for the National Federation of Independent Republicans (RI), assisting Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. He joined the government in 1974 as secretary of state for universities, and under Raymond Barre’s administration, he was named minister of youth, sports, and recreation from 1978 to 1981.
