Jean Hancock is the sister of jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. Miss Hancock who died at the age of 41, worked as a computer consultant in Half Moon Bay, California. She wrote lyrics for many songs for her brother and the soul band Earth, Wind & Fire.

She was raised in Hyde Park and attended the University of Chicago Laboratory School, where a memorial fund was set up. She was born on the South Side of Chicago.

Tuesday night on August 6 1985 in Los Angeles, a private memorial service was held for Jean Hancock, a native of Chicago and a computer analyst and lyricist who passed away in the crash of Delta Air Lines Flight 191 in Dallas on Friday, August 2, 1985. A public memorial service was arranged later.

Her parents Wayman and Winnie, who have residences in Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as her other brother, Wayman Jr., were the other survivors in addition to her brother.
