In 2005, he became the Eurogroup’s first permanent President. 

Juncker was the leader of the European People’s Party (EPP) in 2014.

On November 1, 2014, he took over as President from José Manuel Barroso.

Juncker has asserted numerously on different platforms that his responsibilities will be the formation of a digital single market, the advancement of an EU Energy Union, the dialogue of the Transatlantic Trade Agreement, the prolonged reform of the European Union’s Economic and Monetary Union—with a focus on the social dimension, a “targeted fiscal capacity” for the Eurozone, and the renegotiation of British EU membership in 2015–2016.
