Jay told Paper Magazine that, despite being raised as a girl, he began to identify as a boy around the age of six or seven.

“I always felt like I had to make a decision when I was younger. I was a girl who liked other girls, I knew that” he said. “However, I felt that the only way you could like another girl as if you were a boy was because of what I had been taught.”

Jay dresses in men’s clothing to school instead of other more “typical” feminine attire because he is proud of his masculine identity.
